IATA General Label Specifications
The material, printing, and any adhesive on all labels must be sufficiently durable to withstand normal transport conditions, such as different types of weather, without losing their effectiveness. All labels must also conform to the shape, color, format, symbols, and text specified in these Regulations, unless otherwise indicated. These specifications help packaging handlers easily identify the type of hazard, especially in emergency situations.
All labels must be securely affixed or printed on packaging so that they are readily visible and legible. They must not be obscured by any part of the packaging or by any other label or mark. Each label must be affixed or printed on a background of contrasting color and have a dotted- or solid-line outer boundary. The labels cannot be folded or affixed in such a manner that parts of the label appear on different faces of the package. If the package has an irregular shape that prohibits the application of the label on the package surface, a strong tag may be attached. The package must be of an appropriate size so that all labels can be attached. Labels cannot overlap on cylindrical packages.
