IATA Placement of Labels

As long as the package dimensions are adequate, the labels should be placed in the following locations:

  • On the same surface of the package near the Proper Shipping Name marking
  • Adjacent to the shipper's or consignee's address
  • At a 45° angle (diamond shaped)

If different items of dangerous goods are packed in the same outer packaging and require multiple hazard labels, the labels must be affixed next to each other. Similarly, if there are labels identifying primary and subsidiary risks, they must be affixed next to each other on the same surface of the package.

If package orientation labels are required, one label must be affixed to each opposing side of the package, with the arrows pointing in the upright position.

Labels representative of all dangerous goods required on packages within an overpack must be clearly visible through the overpack or reproduced on the outside of the overpack. Only one hazard label is required per class or division contained within the overpack.

To comply with the GHS standard of labelling, when labelling with a GHS pictogram not required by these regulations, the shipper must use the full GHS label, and not solely the pictogram.
