IATA General Label Specifications

For each package and overpack requiring labels, the shipper is responsible for the following:

  • Remove or obliterate any irrelevant labeling already on the package or overpack.
  • Use only labels of durable quality and of the correct specification.
  • Inscribe any required additional information on each label in durable manner.
  • Affix appropriate labels in the correct location and in a secure manner.
  • Ensure that the labeling responsibilities are completely fulfilled when the package or overpack is presented to the operator.

There are two types of labels:

  • Hazard labels - required for most dangerous goods in all classes
  • Handling labels - required, either alone or in addition to hazard labels, for some dangerous goods
