IATA Markings - Shipper Responsibility

Marking and Labeling provides all of the general and class specific marks and labels that need to be included on packages for air transport. The shipper is responsible for all marks and labels. Since not all dangerous goods share the same risks, marking and labeling enable a dangerous goods shipper or operator to quickly and accurately identify the associated hazard. For each package and overpack, the shipper is responsible for the following:

  • Check that relevant markings are in the correct location and meet the quality and specification requirements in these Regulations.
  • Remove or obliterate any irrelevant markings already on the package or overpack.
  • Ensure that each outer or single packaging used bears the proper specification marks.
  • Apply any appropriate new mark in the correct location, and ensure it is of durable quality and correct specification.
  • Ensure that all responsibilities for marking are completely fulfilled when the package or overpack is sent to the operator.
