IATA Markings
Markings are placed on UN specification packagings to indicate that the packaging corresponds to a successful design type and complies with the manufacturing provisions. However, the markings do not necessarily confirm that the packaging may be used for any particular substance. The purpose of the marking is to assist packaging manufacturers, users, operators, and appropriate authorities in identifying the type of packaging and to indicate that performance tests have been met.
All single packagings and all outer packagings, including composite and combination packagings, that meet UN specifications must bear durable, legible, and appropriately sized and placed markings. Inner packagings are not required to be marked. Handwritten markings are not acceptable. Instead, the markings must be printed or embossed directly on the packaging.
