IATA Other General Packing Requirements

Other general packing requirements include:

  • Friction: The nature and thickness of the outer packaging must not create enough friction during transport to generate heat.
  • Venting: Packagings with venting features to reduce internal pressure are not permitted for air transport, unless otherwise specified in the DGR.
  • Orientation: Combination packagings with liquid dangerous goods must be packed with closures oriented upright. Orientation labels must be indicated.
  • Minimum size: Packagings must be of sufficient size with enough space to properly affix all labels.
  • Empty packagings: If empty packagings previously held dangerous goods, they must be treated in the same ways as specified by the DGR until steps have been taken to nullify any hazard, such as purging and thorough flushing of the packaging with a neutralizing agent.
  • Wet ice: If regular ice (not dry ice) is used as a coolant, it must not affect the packaging integrity.
  • Liquid packagings: All packagings intended to hold liquids must be submitted to suitable leak-proof testing before first use.
  • Life cycle: Plastic drums and jerricans must not be used more than five years after their manufacture, since the plastic can break down and potentially result in leaks or other issues.
