IATA Outer Packaging Additional Codes
Some packagings use an additional code following the packaging code. These codes include:
- V - for special packagings that must meet the requirements of 6.3.1.2
- U - for special packagings of infectious substances that must meet the requirements of 6.5.2
- W - for packaging manufactured to different specifications from Subsection 6.2 but considered equivalent under the requirements of 6.0.1.3
- T - for salvage packaging that must meet the requirements of 5.0.1.6, 6.0.6, and 6.7
Inner packagings are identified based on the material from which they are manufactured, such as glass, plastic, or metal. The exception is for aerosols, which use a three- or four- character code to identify the type of material, construction, and performance test standard. Aerosols will be covered in more detail later in this subsection. Refer to Table 5.0.B for a list of inner packagings and Table 5.0.C for a list of UN outer or single packagings used in air transport.
