IATA Salvage Packaging

Salvage packagings are special packagings for damaged, defective, leaking, or non-conforming dangerous goods that need to be transported for recovery or disposal. Salvage packagings must meet the requirements of 5.0.1.6.2 and 6.7, and to be shipped they require prior approval from the appropriate national authority.

Salvage package requirements are designed to prevent excessive movement of the damaged or leaking packages within the salvage packaging. They must be packed in a single packaging composed of a material resistant to any chemical or other reaction of the leaking or spilled dangerous goods. Salvage packages cannot be used with dangerous goods in Classes 1, 2, 7, and Division 6.2, with the exception of medical and clinical waste that falls under UN 3291.

Other special packing types covered in Subsection 5.0.1 include the transport of portable tanks, live animals with oxygen, open flames, and open external carriage.
