IATA Samples
Sometimes the hazard class of an article or substance is uncertain, and it is being transported for further testing. In these cases, the shipper can select a tentative hazard class, proper shipping name, and UN number. This tentative classification must be based on the shipper's knowledge of the substance along with the application of DGR classification criteria and the precedence of hazards. The proper shipping name must be supplemented with the word "sample."
Samples are subject to the following limitations:
- The substance is not considered to be forbidden for transport by 2.1.1.
- The substance is not considered to meet the criteria for Class 1 substances, infectious substance, or radioactive material.
- The substance is in compliance with 3.4.1.2.5 if it is a self-reactive substance or 3.5.2.6 if it is an organic peroxide.
- The net weight of the package does not exceed 2.5 kg.
- The sample is not packed with other goods.
