IATA Specific Packing Instructions
Each packing instruction lists acceptable single and combination packagings for the dangerous good. For combination packages, tables are included to show the acceptable outer packagings and associated inner packagings and their permitted maximum quantity. Where appropriate, packing instructions may include stricter packing requirements than the packing group typically applies.
In general, packing instructions do not provide compatibility guidance. You must check that the selected packaging is compatible with the dangerous good. For instance, glass receptacles are not suitable for most fluorides.
The following packagings must not be used as single packagings when the substance being transported can potentially become a liquid:
- Drums made out of plywood or fiberboard
- Boxes made out of wood or expandable plastic
- Bags
- Composite packagings
