IATA General Testing Requirements

Performance tests take into account the material used in the packagings, the constructional design of the packagings, and whether the goods being transported are solid or liquid. The objective of a performance test is to ensure that there is no loss of contents during normal transport conditions.

Each type of packaging design must successfully pass a test as specified in IATA DGR Subsection 6.3 before it can be used. The design includes the size, material, thickness, manner of construction and packing, and any surface treatments used. Tests must be conducted as specified by the appropriate national authority and when any modification to the design is made. Certain testing exemptions may be made, as specified in IATA DGR Subsection 6.3.1.2.
