IATA Specific Testing Requirements

Limited quantity packagings must be capable of withstanding a drop test from a height of 1.2 m onto a rigid, flat surface. The outer package must not show any damage liable to affect safety during transport. A limited quantity packaging must also be capable of withstanding a stacking test without breakage or leakage of the inner packaging.

All salvage packagings must be tested and marked according to the requirements of Packing Group II. See Subsection 6.7 for more details on the test criteria for salvage packagings.

Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) are rigid or flexible portable packagings that meet the following criteria:

  • Less than 3,000 L for solids and liquids of Packing Groups II and III
  • Less than 1,500 L for solids of Packing Group I when packed in flexible, rigid plastics, composite, fiberboard, and wooden IBCs
  • Less than 3,000 L for solids of Packing Group I when packed in metal IBCs
  • Less than 3,000 L for radioactive material
  • Are designed for mechanical handling
  • Are resistant to stresses produced in handling and transport

The only authorized dangerous good to be transported in IBCs is UN 3077, Environmentally hazardous substances, solid, N.O.S.. More details on the testing requirements for IBCss can be found in Subsection 6.8.
