Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Systems
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) are designed to remove the moisture in the air prior to circulating air through a building. Any time an HVAC system is turned off and additional moisture is introduced into the building's environment, a greater risk for humidity issues occur.
HVAC systems provide an effective means of mold dissemination throughout a building. If mold is growing near the HVAC system, the spores produced can be spread throughout the building via the air ducts. When mold is found growing on the inside of the metal air ducts, they need to be cleaned. If mold is growing in the insulation surrounding the ducts or inside of them, it needs to be removed and replaced to prevent further spread of the mold spores. To control moisture in air ducts, follow these steps:
- Repair leaks and address water damage.
- Remove any standing water.
- Properly seal and insulate air ducts in any non-air-conditioned space.
- Operate humidification equipment according to the manufacturer's specifications.
- Dry any organic material promptly after cleaning.
