Mold Key Terms and Definitions

  • Containment - a way to enclose and control the release of mold, or dust that contains mold, into surrounding areas.
  • Indoor air - all air within a structure that is occupied by people, but not including areas vented to the outdoors, such as attics and crawlspaces.
  • Mold - living or dead fungi, or any of its parts or spores.
  • Mycotoxin - a toxic substance that is produced by a fungus.
  • Remediation - the removal, sanitizing, treatment, or cleaning of mold and materials contaminated by mold.
  • Sampling - the examination of a sample of mold collected during a mold assessment to determine if mold is present, and if so, the types and amounts present.
