Preventing Future Mold Contamination

In order to prevent future mold contamination, follow the guidelines already laid out in this course. Controlling moisture is the most important factor in creating a safe, mold-free environment. In order to accomplish this, you need to do the following:

• Maintain a clean and dry building.
• Address any wet or damp areas within 48 hours.
• Repair any plumbing leaks or building leaks as quickly as possible.
• Keep a watch out for wet spots and condensation.
• Prevent moisture from condensation.
• Maintain HVAC systems by keeping drip pans clean, flowing properly, and without obstruction.
• Maintain a humidity level between 30 and 50 percent.
• Vent appliances that exhaust moisture to the outside, if at all possible.
• Inspect the building and HVAC units regularly.
• Ensure that the building's foundation remains dry by properly sloping and providing drainage.
