Specialized Equipment For Mold

When investigating a structure for moisture and mold, your eyes and nose, along with a flashlight, are the most vital pieces of equipment for the job. There are, however, a few pieces of specialized equipment to help with investigations. These include borescopes and moisture meters.

Borescopes

Borescopes consist of a tiny camera on a long and flexible tube. Attachments are attached to the end of the borescope that direct the view of the camera. By cutting a small opening in a wall, an inspector can insert the borescope and see the inside of wall cavities, as well as the backside of drywall.

Moisture Meters

Moisture meters can detect moisture pockets in a building. Where moisture exists, mold growth is more likely. There are two main types of moisture meters; pin-type and pinless meters. A pin-type meter uses hygroscopic materials to send electrode currents through the material with the pins. A pinless meter uses radio frequency instead of the electrical currents.

Humidity Gauges

Humidity gauges are also known as hygrometers. When paired with a thermometer, a humidity gauge measures the amount of moisture that exists in the atmosphere. They do this by using fibers that respond to the humidity by tightening or loosening, much like a human hair.

Thermographic Cameras

These cameras use infrared radiation to identify moisture sources. They can be used to detect moisture under floors, over ceilings, and behind walls by detecting changes in temperature measurement. Moisture is cooler than standard construction materials, which allows for early detection of conditions that promote mold growth.
