What Is Mold?
Mold is a fungus that grows both indoors and out. It is an organism that multiplies using small, microscopic spores that spread easily by air currents. Mold is incredibly important to our environment as it breaks down organic materials, like dead leaves and food scraps.
In order for these mold spores to thrive, they need the right environment. Moisture is necessary for the spores to grow. As these mold growths occur, they break down whatever organic material they are growing on by digesting the material, which can damage wood, furnishings, and sheetrock. In addition to causing cosmetic damage, if left unchecked, it can also lead to structural damage in buildings.
Mold needs two things to grow indoors: moisture and food. As just described, its food is any organic material. Controlling indoor moisture levels can limit mold growth. While moisture, light, and temperature can all impact what kind of mold growth is occurring, often you will find that there are several types growing in the same place.
