Important MSHA Training Requirement Notice: This course is designed to support topics commonly included in MSHA Part 48 training programs, but does not, by itself, fulfill all MSHA training requirements or result in an official Form 5000-23. Completion includes a certificate of completion. Final training documentation and Form 5000-23 records must be completed by the mine operator, under an approved training plan. Learn how MSHA compliance works.
CTO offers additional online training for Cal/OSHA, DOT HAZMAT, EEOC, EPA, HIPAA, IATA, IMDG, OSHA, Canada OHS, and TDG.
MSHA training online helps miners and contractors identify and minimize exposure to hazards typically found at mines. Depending on the type of online training you require, course content may also include emergency procedures, first aid, miners' rights and responsibilities, hazard communication, electrical safety, confined spaces, and materials handling safety.
Mining safety training is divided into two parts: MSHA Part 46 Surface Miner training and MSHA Part 48 Underground Miner training. Working in mines poses numerous health hazards, such as cave-ins, explosions, landslides, and hazardous materials. Before you begin work at a mine site, it is important that you understand these hazards and your rights as a miner. Safety is the most important consideration in any mining endeavor.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulates and inspects mine sites to ensure that miners have received MSHA regulations training. MSHA training is required for all new mining employees, including contractors, and experienced miners must complete annual refresher training.

MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) training refers to federally mandated safety education for miners. It aims to equip workers with essential knowledge about mining hazards, health standards, emergency procedures, and safe work practices as outlined under 30 CFR Part 46 (surface mining) and Part 48 (underground and coal mining). It includes both new miner and annual refresher training.
Technically, there’s no such thing as an official “MSHA certification.” The term is often used as a shorthand for completing MSHA training and receiving proof of completion. Anyone working in mining operations regulated by MSHA must complete this training. That includes miners, supervisors, independent contractors, and construction workers at mine sites. Even contractors or service personnel who spend significant time at a mine are required to complete MSHA training.
Yes. MSHA allows online training that meets regulatory standards. CTO offers fully online, self-paced courses, with instant certificate issuance upon successful completion.
The cost of MSHA safety training depends on the specific course you need. Prices can vary based on the type of training, course length, and whether you’re taking it on its own or as part of a bundle. Whether you're a new miner or completing annual refresher training, we offer affordable options to meet your compliance needs.
Yes. Our online MSHA courses are carefully designed to meet federal requirements under 30 CFR Part 46 and Part 48. They are structured to be used as components of a mine operator’s MSHA-compliant training plan and can be integrated into your employer’s record-keeping and training system.
The length of MSHA safety training depends on the type of course and how it’s delivered. For example, New Miner Training under Part 46 for surface miners requires a total of 24 hours, which combines eight hours of foundational training with an additional 16 hours of site-specific instruction provided by the employer. Once you’re trained, you’ll need to complete Annual Refresher Training, which usually takes around eight hours each year. If you choose live virtual or in-person formats, these hours are often scheduled into single-day sessions, while online courses may allow you to progress at your own pace.
Yes. Federal law mandates that miners receive both initial and annual refresher training. Mine operators must maintain effective training plans, and instructors must meet competency requirements for compliance with training regulations.
