Technically, there’s no such thing as an official “MSHA certification.” The term is often used as a shorthand for completing MSHA training and receiving proof of completion. Anyone working in mining operations regulated by MSHA must complete this training. That includes miners, supervisors, independent contractors, and construction workers at mine sites. Even contractors or service personnel who spend significant time at a mine are required to complete MSHA training.

For example, New Miner Training under Part 46 for surface miners requires a total of 24 hours, which combines eight hours of foundational training with an additional 16 hours of site-specific instruction provided by the employer. Once you’re trained, you’ll need to complete Annual Refresher Training, which usually takes around eight hours each year. If you choose live virtual or in-person formats, these hours are often scheduled into single-day sessions, while online courses may allow you to progress at your own pace.
